FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What causes neck pain?

A variety of conditions or injuries could be the root cause of your neck pain. Some of the common causes of neck pain include:

  • Arthritis
  • Herniated discs or degenerative disc disease
  • Nerve compression
  • Muscle sprains and strains
  • Injuries, such as whiplash
  • Diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis or meningitis

Your lifestyle also contributes to neck pain. On average, people spend over four hours a day with their heads tilted down, looking at their phones. That means that you stress the muscles, tendons, and bones in your neck for hours every day, which can eventually lead to a painful condition referred to as text neck.

A similar problem can develop if you work at a desk and your workstation isn’t set up correctly. The top of your screen should be level with your eye line to prevent you from having to crane your neck to look up or down at your screen. Also, when you sit at your desk, your arms should be at right angles so your forearms can rest on your desk.

How is the cause of neck pain diagnosed?

Dr. Dhaliwal diagnoses the cause of neck pain with a physical exam and consultation. He asks about your symptoms and your lifestyle. He feels your neck and may guide you through some gentle stretches and movements to check your range of motion and gauge any pain.

Dr. Dhaliwal may also use diagnostic imaging studies, such as X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans to identify the condition causing your pain.

How is neck pain treated?

At SEVA Pain Institute, Dr. Dhaliwal provides highly customized treatments to relieve your neck pain.

Depending on the condition causing your pain, he may suggest physical therapy, including exercises, stretches, and massage to relieve muscular tension and restore strength and flexibility to your neck. In addition to your therapy in-office, you may be given exercises and stretches to practice at home to maintain your progress between appointments.

If your pain is a result of nerve compression or another neurological irregularity, Dr. Dhaliwal offers nerve blocks and neurostimulation treatments. Neurostimulation uses a mild electrical current to interrupt the pain messages passing between your brain and body.
